Arsenic and Old Beef - Beware the TPP

Open Message from a concerned American to the U.K...

As an American who regularly visits the UK to enjoy the simple pleasures of eating in pubs where they know where their meat is sourced and their vegetables are grown. I love the fact that many of your butchers take pride in the fantastic quality of their meat. Even your supermarkets, the best of them at any rate, pay attention to welfare standards and sustainability.

It’s not the same in the United States where quality butchers are scarcer than hen’s teeth. And in the US most animals are raised in heartbreaking feed-lots and never graze on lush pastures.

HYDROGEN: IT’S A REAL GAS

Regular readers of our columns will know we are not great fans of wind turbines or solar arrays and we argue they are anything but green or sustainable. However we love the idea of power harvested from the endlessly moving sea and advocate the UK government should back two prototypes projects for tidal lagoons on the Welsh coast at the cities of Swansea and Cardiff.

ALL THE LONELY PEOPLE

In a recent edition the UK’s New Scientist magazine posed a fundamental but politically and socially explosive question. Should we impose population controls on the human race? The article quotes the Malthusian warning of 1798 that growing population would inevitably see mankind eat its way through the planet’s finite resources condemning millions to famine.

Thomas Malthus’s prediction has indeed come to pass with increasing frequency, at least on a regional level, but by and large the population, now standing at 7 billion, has yet to exhaust the planet’s bounty. Of course that may not be the case by the end of the millennium when, all things being equal, we may have three or four billion more planetary compatriots.

PACKAGING POLLUTION

Over the past three years Bohemianmojo has consistently argued the most prominent so-called sustainable solutions to the planet’s problems are not really sustainable at all. Rather, we believe, they are virtue signalling by big business, which has the resources and personnel to identify the next popular wave out in the set of trends and ride it.

TIME TO REALLY HARVEST THE TIDE

Seventy one per cent of the Earth’s surface is covered by the planet’s constantly restless, tide pulled oceans and Bohemianmojo is totally committed to seeing that enormous power harnessed for our energy needs. We are definitely not fans of inefficient, expensive wind-power or overhyped and polluting solar farms (which also, by the way, kill birds) and we’ve never been shy to say so. However we are now celebrating three significant steps towards the production of wave and tide power off the UK’s coast.

At What Price Food Safety???

What price indeed. At Bohemian Mojo we decided it was high time we looked at the mind-boggling hypocrisies that surround food safety.  It’s a big subject but after some recent happenings we thought it might be time to give you our take on what’s really happening out there

Food safety is defined by the World Health Organisation as ‘thehandling, preparation, and storage of food in ways that prevent food borne illness along the entire chain from farm to plate. According to the WHO that includes guarding food from chemical contamination.

MORE ABOUT GMBEES

I think most people are aware honeybees are in trouble and, in the past, we’ve written about our hive nightmare – genetically modified bees. So we thought it was time to give readers an update on the many way bees are being tampered with. Pre-genetic engineering, back in the 1950’s and 60’s varieties of bees were crossbred in an attempt to increase honey yields and the introduction of African strains led to the creation of the notorious ‘killer bees.’ They have a dangerous sting and an extremely violent colony defence instinct and guess what thousands of them escaped from a research facility in Brazil You’d have thought we’d learnt our lesson back then but no, we’ve learnt nothing.
